We build an email service, so treat this as informed rather than neutral. But an unfair comparison helps nobody — so here's where Gmail genuinely wins, and where the differences actually matter.
Encryption at rest
Gmail: encrypted at rest on Google's infrastructure, with keys Google controls. Google can read message content, and does — for spam filtering, Smart Compose, search indexing and product features.
Tobava Mail: received message bodies are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, with the key held by us. Subjects, attachments and sent mail are not encrypted at rest today. We do not currently offer end-to-end encryption in which only you hold the key.
The honest nuance: *any* provider that receives standard SMTP mail can technically see it arrive. The question is what happens next, and what the business model requires. Ours doesn't require reading your mail.
Advertising and profiling
Gmail: Google stopped scanning consumer Gmail for ad targeting in 2017, which is a real improvement often overlooked by critics. But your Gmail activity still feeds a Google account profile that shapes advertising across Search, YouTube and the wider network.
Tobava Mail: no ad network, no tracking pixels, no profile. We charge for the product instead, which is the entire reason the incentives differ.
Spam filtering and deliverability
Gmail wins here, and it isn't close. Google filters spam across billions of mailboxes and has visibility no smaller provider can match. Our filtering uses several independent scanning layers on inbound mail, and the anti-virus layer fails closed rather than letting unscanned mail through — but Google's scale is a genuine advantage we won't pretend to match.
The same goes for outbound deliverability: mail from a major provider rarely gets questioned. A smaller domain has to earn reputation through correct SPF, DKIM and DMARC, which we configure for you but which still takes time to build.
Jurisdiction and data sovereignty
Gmail: a US company, subject to US legal process including the CLOUD Act, which can compel disclosure of data held abroad.
Tobava Mail: Australian owned and operated. Different legal regime, different disclosure framework. Whether that's better depends entirely on your threat model — it's a difference, not automatically an upgrade. We cover this in where does your email actually live.
Features and ecosystem
Gmail: enormous third-party integration ecosystem, excellent mobile apps, deep Google Workspace integration, offline support, and a search engine that is genuinely best in class.
Tobava Mail: Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Calendar, Chat, Meet video calls and a PDF editor in one login. Full IMAP/SMTP so any standard client works on desktop and mobile; a native Android app is in early access and iOS is still in development. Our search is fast but not Google's search.
Price
Gmail is free for consumers; Google Workspace is around A$10/user/month at the entry tier. Tobava Mail has a free tier, with paid plans adding custom domains, aliases and more storage. Google is cheaper at the very bottom because you're paying with data.
So who should actually switch?
Switch if: you handle client confidential information, you're in a regulated profession, you want your provider's incentives aligned against reading your mail, or you specifically want data outside US jurisdiction.
Don't switch if: you depend on deep Google Workspace integrations, you need best-available spam filtering above all else, or your whole team lives in Google Docs collaboratively today.
Middle path worth considering: keep Gmail for low-stakes signups and newsletters, and move client, financial and confidential correspondence to a private provider. Splitting by sensitivity is often more practical than an all-or-nothing migration.
If you do decide to move, our Gmail migration guide walks through it without losing any mail.
